3D TV Without Glasses - Do They Really Exist?

Understandably, many people interested in 3D technology at home are searching for 3D TVs without glasses. Keep reading to find out how the technology stands up now, and what's on the cards for future releases.

Why Do We Need Glasses?

Any search for 3D TVs without glasses will show you that they're currently impossible to find. Limitations in current technology mean that we all need to wear glasses if we want to be able to view 3D from within the home. Why? Because 3D glasses split the image into two separate parts for each eye. Without the glasses, the screen just doesn't look right!

Although most of us put up with glasses to bring us 3D technology, they do have some drawbacks: they can be uncomfortable, they cost a lot, and they're not convenient to use.

How The Technology For 3D TV Without Glasses Is Shaping Up

3D without glasses is only currently available on personal devices, such as the portable games console Nintendo 3DS. The reason why it works on this console is the fact that it's used by one person. They're always viewing it from a specific distance away from the screen, which is essential for 3D to work. With TVs, on the other hand, people view it from a variety of angles and distances.

That said, TV manufacturers have started to preview models for 3D TVs without glasses. LG, Toshiba and Sony all showed prototypes in 2011, but they had a big flaw in the fact that there was a very small viewing angle of around 15 degrees. This wouldn't work in most people's homes, especially when you consider the fact that most TVs of today have a 180 degree viewing angle.

Price is always going to be an issue, too. 3D TV already costs more than traditional HD TV, and the glasses add even more to the cost. True, 3D TV without glasses will save money on pairs of glasses, but the technology is still very expensive to produce.

Should You Wait?

3D TVs without glasses WILL be released at some point in the future, there's no doubt about it. That said, it's not worth waiting for. If you want a 3D TV now, buy one. These TVs have an excellent viewing angle and will be a lot more affordable than glasses-free sets.
