Before you purchase your 3D television set, let us try to understand how 3D TV works. 3D images
are something we're all getting used to in movie theaters, and the technology is also making big waves in the world
of home entertainment. Understanding how 3D TV works means you'll be in a better position to choose your 3D TV
wisely. Keep reading for a brief introduction.
What Does 3D Mean?
3D is the mechanization that has the ability to turn content from two-dimensional images into
objects that literally leap out at us, helping us to feel as though we're a true part of the action. How does this
happen? The screen displays two slightly different images, sent to each eye separately. The 3D image is a
combination of both images.
Passive 3D: The first type of 3D technology used to make sure we see those two images properly
is called passive 3D. These glasses don't come with shutters (see below) due to the fact that both the right and
left images are sent to our eyes simultaneously. On the plus side, glasses are far cheaper, but the negative is the
fact that the TVs resolution is effectively halved. Most TVs use active 3D.
Active 3D: Next you'll find active 3D. This makes use of two images for the left and right eye
that are shown in quick succession to each other. You need to buy active 3D shutter glasses to make sure you that
receive the right image in the correct eye. They open and close at high speed to make sure this happens. These
glasses are more expensive but they do mean that 3D images can be shown in a higher resolution.
Glasses-Free 3D: There's currently no option for glasses-free 3D, but the technology is expected
for release in 2012.
What Other Equipment Is Necessary For 3D?
Even if you have active or passive 3D glasses, they're not going to work with any old TV set.
You must make sure you buy a 3D-ready television if you want to see movies and TV in 3D. On top of this, you'll
also need to purchase a Blu-Ray player that can handle movies released in 3D.
Normal content on your television isn't usually made to be shown in 3D. In truth, there's a very
limited collection of 3D content available at the present time for you to view at home. The good news is that the
top 3D sets usually come with 2D to 3D conversion built in – which will transform standard 2D content to 3D. That
said, the quality of the content isn't always as good as made-for-3D content.
Understanding how 3D TV works mean you now know exactly what you'll need to buy if you want to
experience this brand new technology in your own home. Yes, 3D costs more, although many of us find it's worth it
for the added cinematic experience.
